Lieber-Gal is a New York–based design studio working across architecture, interiors, historic preservation, and research. We work with property owners by using history, context, and material evidence as tools for contemporary design.
An existing building may carry character, history, awkwardness, beauty, and constraints all at once. Renovating it requires more than solving practical needs; it requires understanding what should remain present as the space changes.
The historic layer is often the most interesting — and most vulnerable — starting point. A detail, a trace, a proportion, a material logic, or a forgotten story can easily be damaged, erased, or misunderstood.
Our role is to bring clarity without flattening the design — turning existing conditions, client needs, and historic layers into a more precise architectural direction.
History as a Design Spark
Historic layers do not have to freeze a building in place. They can be sensed, read, questioned, and worked with. These layers can become the spark for design that feels contemporary, specific, and alive.
What We Work On
If your project involves an existing building, a renovation, an interior, or a site with character, the design process often requires more than a standard approach.
Whether you own a townhouse, apartment, historic property, small hospitality space, or are considering an early-stage development project, the work begins with understanding what is already there — and what it can become.
Scope
Each project asks for a different kind of clarity.
Some need early spatial studies. Some need a renovation concept. Some need interior direction, material thinking, historic research, visual studies, design development documentation, or a technical drawing set.
The scope is shaped around what the project needs in order to move forward, while carrying the existing beauty into the design.
